Procedure and technique

Semi-permanent make-up, also known as micropigmentation, is a form of temporary cosmetic tattooing which allows you to have long-lasting eyeliner and lip colour as well as being able to shape and contour your eyebrows.

The procedure involves tiny particles of pigment being placed beneath the surface of the skin, much like a tattoo. This pigment will stay in the skin for a number of years, gradually breaking down and fading with time, although the longevity of the results will depend on your age and skin type.

Micropigmentation techniques have been refined in recent years and a wider selection of pigment colours have been developed so that technicians can create ultra-natural looks. Only a trained semi-permanent

make-up artist can perform this treatment.

What is cosmetic tattoo/permanent cosmetics?

Permanent Makeup can enhance your brows, eyes and lips with results that last, saving time on your daily beauty routine
Permanent cosmetics and medical tattooing involves the application of pigment into the skin. A professional artist should use specialist equipment and techniques to ensure that the experience is quieter, gentler and less invasive. Although the treatments use needles, these needles are smaller and do not penetrate the skin as deep as traditional tattooing.

Is the treatment painful?

Although permanent cosmetics and medical tattooing are a form of tattooing, the pain factor is considered to be less pronounced as these treatments are gentler and less invasive.

Are cosmetic tattoos suitable for everyone?

Please inform us if you are taking any medication, or have suffered from any illness or virus within the last 6 months. You cannot receive permanent cosmetics if you are pregnant or are breast feeding. Please let us know if you have or are on any medication/ creams to treat acne in the last 6 months. See below for a list of

contra-indictions.

Do the bookings include a retouch/follow up appointment?

Yes, a follow up appointment is included up to 3 months after your initial appointment. Not everyone needs a follow up. After the 3 month period you will be charged as a Colour boost treatment.

What should I avoid before/after the treatment?

Strictly no caffeine/ alcohol/ aspirins or any other form of pain killers 48 hours before your appointment. Please also inform us if you are taking any supplements, for example fish oil tablets, as these will affect how your treatment will heal.

Can I wear make up after the treatment?

You can wear mineral cosmetics immediately. However, you need to wait until the treatment area has healed before wearing traditional cosmetics. If applying traditional cosmetics elsewhere, ensure you don’t cover the treatment area, as this could lead to healing problems.

Permanent cosmetics are typically used to enhance your natural features, therefore after your treatment has healed, you can wear makeup to complement and enhance your permanent cosmetics

Do you do colour for blondes?

Yes there is  a range of colours from blondes to brunette. Our technician will choose a tone to suit your natural hair & skin.

Do different skin types react differently?

Yes they do. Oily skin types must exfoliate well before an appointment. For best results please do this for up to 7 days prior. Oily skin types will soften the pigment in the skin more so than dryer skin types. Oily skin may require more frequent colour boosts as they are likely to fade quicker. Hairstrokes will hold much better and crisper in dry skin and are less likely to fade as quickly as someone with oily skin.

How long will it take?

Treatment times vary depending on how advanced or detailed the required result is. Although some treatments may take as little as 1 hour, you should set aside 2-3 hours for your appointment.

How long will it take to heal?

Everyone is different, but as a general rule the surface skin generally heals between 3-7 days after the treatment, and 10-14 days below the surface. Many people will return to work the same day after a treatment, however, we don’t advise driving after a eyeliner / lash enhancement, in case your eyes are a little swollen or watery immediately after the treatment.

What will I look like straight after the treatment?

Brow and eye treatments tend to look darker in colour immediately after the appointment, while lip colours can look more intense. This softens in a few days. Lips are likely to have some residual swelling and can chap. There may be some slight swelling after eyeliner treatments but this is usually limited.

How long will it last?

This varies from person to person because skin type, diet, genetics and environmental factors can all contribute to how long the pigments will be retained.

As a guide, it could be anything between one to five years before a new treatment is required, although refresher colour boosts are recommended for maintenance during this time. Once the colour starts to change you will know that you are ready for your refresher colour boost. It is important to remember that permanent make-up is a “low”, not a “no” maintenance treatment.

MORE INFORMATION

Am I a Candidate?

Anyone who wears make-up is a potential candidate. If you lack colour and shape to your lips and want to enhance them without having dermal fillers; if you regularly pencil in your eyebrow or would like to give them a better shape or fill in gaps where they have been over plucked; if you want to enhance your eyes and want the effect of eyeliner without the running and under eye smudging; if you want to open up your eyes and raise your brows without the need for a brow lift. People undertake micropigmentation for many different reasons, ranging from those who simply want to look their best at all times, to those with allergies to conventional make-up or who do not have time to apply make-up daily; those with physical difficulties which make the application of make-up impossible.

Before Treatment – Your first appointment with a practitioner should be a consultation to discuss your requirements and expectations from micropigmentation, and also to ascertain the correct choice of pigment depending on your skin tone. A practitioner may also use cosmetic pencils to show you the possible results you can achieve.

During Treatment – Depending on whether you have micropigmentation for the lips, or any other area, an anaesthetic cream may be first applied to help minimise discomfort.  A cosmetic pencil will then be used to create a template for the procedure. The selected pigments are blended and applied into the skin with a very fine needle via a small hand held electrical device. The results should mimic natural looking make-up and will last anything from 6-18 months.

Recovery – No recovery time is necessary and you can return to normal activities immediately after a micropigmentation treatment, although the treated area may be a little swollen or bruised for a day or so. Treated areas will usually exfoliate and lighten to a more natural looking shade within a week or so, so a second visit may be necessary to perfect the shape and deepen the colour.

Benefits – Semi-permanent make-up offers cosmetic enhancement to enhance the eyebrows, eyelids, lips and cheeks for those who do not have the time or the skill to apply natural-looking make-up on a daily basis.

Risks and Complications – A permanent make-up procedure is akin to getting a tattoo, so you may experience some discomfort but your skin should return to normal relatively quickly. Any side effects such as swelling or redness are generally mild and allergic reactions to permanent cosmetics are rare. You may request a skin sensitivity test in an invisible area beforehand to see how your skin responds, and some technicians routinely recommend a sensitivity test as part of the treatment.

Contra-indications - Skin infection or malignancy; connective tissue disease; tendency to scar or pigment badly; allergy to pigments; pregnancy; recent laser, chemical peel and tanning treatments, using retinol cream at the same time and place where tattoo is done, certain drugs increasing photosensitivity, porphyries, psoriasis.
